Hey! "Apple" People! Clueless PC Mom needs help!?

Hi, my daughter is in first grade, and her school uses Macs. I know nothing of them...really nothing. I would like to get her a used computer that she will be able to get some practice on. I cannot afford a new one. I've found some G3's that are pretty cheap, but I want to make sure that it is not completely obsolete. I've seen Tiger, Panther, etc... Which should I look for?
