My 21 mth grandson continually wakes up w/ thick, green mucus- stuffy nose?

what can cause this to keep coming back? What should he be taking for it if not antibotics. I don't want to see it develop into an ear affection again. What test would be recommended to find the cause at his age, other than this he is a healthy little boy.
