What is the advantage of a slab foundation?

over a pier and beam if in the area you are in, due to the clay soil that cracks and shifts, they have to put in a lot of piers down at least 25 feet deep before they pour the slab. Why not just do a pier and beam and forget the slab that might still shift and crack.
